Topics include: understanding scale and properties at the nanoscale; performance materials such as carbon nanotubes, textiles, polymers, shape memory alloys and glass; health and medical fields including drug delivery, imaging and diagnostics; water and sunscreens; and social and ethical aspects of emerging technologies.
Advanced chemistry development (ACD) freeware
This page lists freeware available from Advanced Chemistry Development, including ChemSketch a chemical drawing package. ChemSketch is an educational tool which allows users to draw chemical structures such as organics, organometallics, polymers and Markush structures. It includes features such as calculation of molecular properties (eg molecular weight, density), 2D and 3D structure viewing and functionality for naming structures. The site also provides ACD/Column Selector a free tool that assists users to search a database of commmonly used chromatography columns to locate the those with the properties best suited to the separation at hand.
American chemical society (ACS): education
The American Chemical Society (ACS) provides a variety of educational resources on their education page for teachers and students from K-12 and above. Resources for educators include: green chemistry activities, experiments and online resources; laboratory safety guidelines by year level; manual on teaching chemistry to students with disabilities; Chemistry in the National Science Education Standards book, with chapter on inquiry learning; Journal of Chemical Education; and other educational publications. Resources for students include: ChemMatters Magazine that demystifies chemistry in our everyday lives; career information; and a guide to undertaking research. In the Explore Chemistry section there are additional resources for teachers and their students such as: Everyday Chemistry; Landmarks in Chemical History including Industrial advances and Medical miracles; an interactive Periodic Table of Elements; and Science for Kids (K-8) with activities on Chemical & physical change, So...
Australian journal of chemistry: an international journal for chemical science
The Australian Journal of Chemistry has achieved international standing for its publication of original research in all branches of chemistry: theoretical, physical, inorganic, organic, organometallic, structural. All submitted articles are assessed on the basis of their original contribution to chemistry and chemical technology.
Baruch's chemistry lab safety tutorial
Online tutorial on basic laboratory safety developed by the Department of Natural Sciences Baruch College New York. Topics include: Exploring the lab, What to wear, Safe practices and Emergency Scenarios. The tutorial takes 20 minutes and includes a quiz. Requires Flash 7.
Beginners guide to biogas
Biogas can provide a clean, easily controlled source of renewable energy from organic waste materials for a small labour input, replacing firewoood or fossil fuels (which are becoming more expensive as supply falls behind demand). During the conversion process pathogen levels are reduced and plant nutrients made more readily available, so better crops can be grown while existing resources are conserved.
Cell biology animation
The animations on this site demonstrate all major aspects of cell biology: amino acids and protein, cell structure, DNA replication, transcription and translation, cellular cycles (Krebs, glycolysis, mitosis), diffusion, photosynthesis, pH, and water. The user can control the stages of the animation and can go back and repeat each stage.
Chemical database
This database will allow the user to retrieve information for any of over 1300 hazardous chemicals based on a keyword search. Potential keywords include names, formula and registry numbers (CAS, DOT, RTECS and EPA).
Chemical education digital library
The Chemical Education Digital Library is a storehouse of digital resources for education in the chemical sciences. Creators of this site intend for it to be a place where teachers and students can contribute, share, organise, and use quality chemistry education materials. Some of the resources available include: an interactive periodic table of the elements; Models 360 - a collection of interactive 3D models of organic and inorganic compounds; ChemPRIME - a wiki based approach to teaching chemistry, linking chemistry concepts to exemplars from other disciplines and everyday life; a stereochemistry tutorial covering different types of isomers and the concept of chirality; and ChemEd courses based on the Moodle course management system. ChemEd DL is a product of collaboration with the Journal of Chemical Education, the Education Division of the American Chemical Society and the ChemCollective Project.
Chemical elements: online interactive periodic table of the elements
This online periodic table links to a variety of elemental data, as well as atomic structure diagram, isotope information and facts for each chemical element. The periodic table may be viewed with selected elemental data displayed under the chemical symbol, for example: element name, atomic number or melting point. The site also provides a description of the element groups (alkali metals, alkaline earths, halogens etc) as well as a listing of the elements contained in each of these groups.
